Uniform State Test
DFS has informed the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS) that it will adopt the Uniform State Test (UST) effective September 2, 2014.
The new test combines both the national and state testing requirements of the SAFE Act and streamlines the application process for mortgage loan originators (MLOs) while continuing to protect consumers and ensure safety and soundness. The UST replaces the separate, state-specific test currently required for aspiring New York MLOs.
Effective September 2, 2014, passing the UST will satisfy the testing requirement for MLOs in New York, regardless of whether the individual took the UST before or after September 2.
The adoption of the UST will not change the educational requirements for MLOs. Individuals seeking licensure in New York are required to complete three (3) hours of state-specific pre-licensure education. If licensed, New York MLOs must additionally satisfy three (3) hours of state-specific continuing education. Through state-specific educational requirements and regular examinations, DFS will continue to hold MLOs responsible for complying with New York laws and regulations.
The cost to take the UST is $110.
More information on the UST implementation is available on the NMLS website.
