Individual Grandfathered Health Plans

If you were enrolled in Healthy NY as of March 23, 2010, and did not make any subsequent changes to your coverage (other than adding or removing dependents or adding prescription drug coverage), you have the option of continuing your Healthy NY as grandfathered coverage.

Grandfathered coverage will exempt you from certain changes due to Federal Healthcare Reform. Grandfathered individual Healthy NY plans will continue to have a $20 co-payment for preventive services and plans with prescription drug coverage will retain the limited prescription drug coverage with a $3,000 annual limit.   Dependents under the age of 19 added to a grandfathered individual plan may be subject to pre-existing condition limitations.

You may elect to change your grandfathered coverage to non-grandfathered at the time of annual recertification or whenever you experience a premium rate change.   It is also important to note that if you remove prescription drug coverage, switch to a High Deductible Health Plan, or switch your coverage to another HMO, you will lose grandfathered status.
