BONNIE STEINGART NAMED INSURANCE DEPT. GENERAL COUNSEL

Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin today announced the appointment of Bonnie Steingart as General Counsel of the Insurance Department. Ms. Steingart assumes her duties at the Insurance Department on September 15.
Ms. Steingart joins the Department from the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson where she was a partner in the Litigation Department. She handled all facets of corporate and securities litigation. She joined the law firm in 1980 and was named a partner in 1987.
As part of her law practice, Ms. Steingart has been involved in SEC administrative proceedings, white collar cases, tax and trusts and estates litigation, and arbitrations. She has advised corporations concerning disclosure and has represented underwriters in connection with initial public offerings. She has also represented insurance companies and regulators including New York Life, Lloyds of London, Federal Agricultural Mortgage Corporation and the New York Superintendent of Banks on a variety of matters.
Ms. Steingart is on the board of directors of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. She is also a member of the Legal Referral Committee of the Bar of the City of New York. She received her B.A. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and her J.D. from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
Superintendent Levin said, "I welcome Bonnie Steingart to the Insurance Department. I know her legal expertise as well as her experience with insurance and the financial services industry will be an important asset to the Department. I look forward to working closely with her at the Department."
