INSURANCE DEPARTMENT ISSUES 1998 AUTO GUIDE FOR CONSUMERS

Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin today released the Department’s 1998 Consumers Guide to Automobile Insurance to educate consumers who are shopping for auto insurance in New York State.

The comprehensive guide, available in both an upstate and a downstate version, explains all mandatory and optional coverages in New York State and is a resource for consumers in determining how much auto insurance they need. The guide also provides consumers with practical cost-saving tips and key information about applying for coverage.

In addition, the guide contains lists of insurers, telephone numbers, and most importantly, sample rates for 26 New York auto insurers and the Assigned Risk Plan to help consumers compare prices. The list of difficult-to-insure vehicles can also be useful for those considering buying or leasing a car.

The guide also offers instructions on how to file a claim with an insurer and help in getting claims resolved. A complaint form is included in the guide if a consumer encounters a problem with an insurer, agent or broker, as well as an arbitration request form.

Consumers can obtain a copy of the new guide by calling the Department’s toll-free telephone number (800-342-3736) or by visiting the Department’s Website: www.ins.state.ny.us.
