NEW YORK STATE INSURANCE DEPARTMENT
CELEBRATES OLDER AMERICANS MONTH
Advises Seniors About Department Resources

New York, May 17, 1999

In honor of National Older Americans Month, Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin advises older New Yorkers that the Department is here to help answer all insurance questions.

A free consumer guide on Medicare and Medicare supplement insurance, along with premium rate information, is available by calling the Department at 1-800-342-3736, or by visiting the Department’s website at www.ins.state.ny.us. A ranking of health insurers in terms of complaints is also available. The Department’s website also contains summaries of important laws so that consumers know what their rights are and can obtain answers to frequently asked questions. Consumers can also obtain free publications on homeowners, auto, life, and long term care insurance.

The Department’s Consumer Services Bureau provides assistance to consumers who are having a problem obtaining satisfaction from their insurance company or agent or broker as well as provides general information. Last year, the Consumer Services Bureau investigated more than 60,000 complaints from consumers and providers. The Bureau also responded to approximately 500,000 telephone inquiries for information. Complaint forms can be downloaded from the website or obtained by calling 1-800-342-3736.

"We strongly encourage older New Yorkers to take advantage of the resources the Department provides to make shopping for needed insurance coverage as easy as possible," said Levin.

The Department’s Consumer Services Bureau also performs outreach and at the request of an organization can speak to groups on Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance and other insurance issues.
