DEPARTMENT TO HOLD PUBLIC HEARING ON DISSOLUTION PLAN
OF MEDICAL MALPRACTICE INSURANCE ASSOCIATION

            Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin announced today that the Department will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, May 31st to review the Department’s proposal for the equitable distribution to authorized medical malpractice insurers of the insureds of the Medical Malpractice Insurance Association (MMIA) and health care practitioners and facilities unable to secure medical malpractice insurance in the voluntary market following the dissolution of the MMIA. This regulation must be promulgated prior to July 1st.

            The hearing, pursuant to Part JJ of Chapter 407 of the Laws of 1999, will begin at 10:00 am on May 31st at:

            On May 1st, Superintendent Levin approved a plan for the dissolution of MMIA, transferring all old liabilities to the Medical Liability Mutual Insurance Company.

            A copy of the Superintendent’s proposed regulation is available on the Department’s web site at www.ins.state.ny.us.

            Those wishing to testify should contact Laurel Presser at (212) 480-5560 by May 30, 2000. Those who wish to testify should limit their remarks to 15 minutes and provide a written copy of their testimony at the hearing to assist the Department in its review.

            Those unable to attend the hearing may submit written statements for inclusion in the official record to Laurel Presser at the Department’s New York City address. The official record will be open until June 5, 2000.
