FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE |
MMIA TO DISCONTINUE WRITING
The
New York State Department of Insurance today announced the first step in the dissolution
of the Medical Malpractice Insurance Association (MMIA). Effective July 1, 2000, MMIA will
no longer be issuing or renewing medical malpractice insurance policies.
The
New York Medical Malpractice Insurance Plan, established by the Superintendent, will
provide for the equitable distribution of the MMIA insureds and other eligible health care
providers unable to obtain insurance in the voluntary market. Insureds of the MMIA whose
policy is expiring and eligible medical providers needing insurance, should contact their
agent or broker for insurers writing this type of coverage in the voluntary market. A list
of companies can be obtained from the Departments website, www.ins.state.ny.us, or
by calling 1-800-522-4370.
For
individuals and facilities unable to obtain insurance in the voluntary market, who need
immediate coverage, the MMIA will be acting as temporary administrator of the Plan. MMIA
can be contacted at 212-962-0210.
Pursuant to statute, the MMIA will be dissolved effective August 31, 2000.
