HIP MEDICARE PROGRAM TO CONTINUE IN SUFFOLK COUNTY

The New York State Insurance Department and the Health Care Financing Administration announced that the Health Insurance Plan of Greater New York will continue to offer a Medicare + Choice program in Suffolk County.

HIP has decided to continue to offer this program to seniors enabling them to have access to services from providers and hospitals that participate with HIP VIP Medicare Plan. A few months ago, HIP, along with four other HMOs, announced that they would withdraw from the Medicare program in Suffolk County because of huge monetary losses.

HIP’s decision to remain in the market will allow over 11,000 HIP members to continue in the Medicare + Choice program in Suffolk and offers an option to those seniors who were displaced by other managed care organizations that have left the Medicare + Choice market in Suffolk County. Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield also offers the Medicare program in Suffolk County.

HIP is sending a mailing to those currently enrolled in its Medicare + Choice program offering them the opportunity to enroll in the new HIP VIP Medicare Plan for 2001.
