SERIO NAMES AUDREY M. SAMERS DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL
Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio today announced that he has named Audrey M. Samers to the position of Deputy Superintendent and General Counsel effective immediately. Ms. Samers joined the Department in May 1998 as Special Counsel to the Superintendent on Holocaust-Related Issues and was promoted to Deputy General Counsel in November of 1998 and First Deputy General Counsel in July of 2000.
"Audrey has been a valuable member of the Department during the past three years and has been instrumental in many of the Departments financial modernization initiatives as well as the Departments oversight of major life insurance company demutualizations," said Serio. "I look forward to working with Audrey in her new role on legal and policy issues facing the Department."
Ms. Samers, as First Deputy General Counsel, has been responsible for providing legal and policy advice to the Department on complex regulatory and corporate and litigation matters, while also providing senior day to day management oversight and administration in the Departments Office of General Counsel. Ms. Samers has also supervised the Departments corporate transactions, including the demutualizations of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Company, Prudential Insurance Company of America, and John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company. As First Deputy General Counsel, Ms. Samers has also overseen the Departments privacy and e-commerce initiatives.
Prior to joining the Department, Ms. Samers was a litigation associate at the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson where she focused on complex securities transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and other financial matters. Ms. Samers received her B.A., magna cum laude, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law.
