DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVES AVAILABLE TO DISCUSS INSURANCE COVERAGE OPTIONS FOR EMPLOYEES OF EMPIRE SPECIALTY STEEL

Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio today announced that representatives from the Department’s Consumer Services Bureau will be participating in an information session in Chautauqua County to explain insurance options for former employees and retirees of Empire Specialty Steel.

The information session will be held, Wednesday, August 15th from 4-6pm at the State University of New York at Fredonia in the King Concert Hall.

On July 16th the Department identified insurers that would assist former employees of Empire Specialty Steel in replacing coverage lost as a result of the company’s bankruptcy. On August 8th Superintendent Serio met with Senator Pat McGee, representatives of the Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency and a United Steel Workers Union representative to further evaluate the impact of the closing of Empire Steel on various insurance coverages. In an effort to continue to ensure that these employees maintain proper insurance coverage, Department representatives will be attending this information session to discuss insurance options and answer related questions.

HMOs and other health insurance agencies have been invited to attend to answer questions and enroll former employees and retirees needing replacement coverage. Several area HMOs have already confirmed their attendance.

For additional details on this information session, please contact Terri Marchon at the Insurance Department at 212-480-5262. Retirees and former employees of Empire Steel can find additional assistance from Consumer Service representatives at the Department’s Buffalo office at (716) 847-7619.
