          Spring is here and many New Yorkers are shopping for new homes and cars. The New York State Insurance Department is taking this as an opportunity to remind consumers that before buying coverage for these large purchases, they should explore all of their options by comparison shopping for insurance.

          By visiting the Department’s Web site at www.ins.state.ny.us or by calling 518-474-6630, consumers can get complete insurance information as well as free comprehensive shopping guides for auto or homeowners insurance, which explain the different types of coverage that are available, list sample premium rates, discounts available and other tips. Complaint forms are also provided for consumers who believe that their insurance company has failed to act fairly.

          Tips consumers should keep in mind are:

• Always pay by check or money order – payable to the insurer, not the agent or broker;
• Comparison shopping makes sense and saves money;
• Verify if your agent or broker is licensed by calling the Insurance Department at
  1-800-342-3736;
• Insurers may offer a multi-policy discount if insuring both your home and car;
• Anti-theft devices earn discounts; ask your insurance company what other discounts offered; and
• Flood insurance is not usually included in a homeowner’s policy.

          In addition, the Automobile Resource Center located on the Department’s Web site also offers consumers information on how to buy auto insurance, required coverage, how to save money and shop for discounts.
