Frauds Bureau Receives Honor for Outstanding Achievement In Fraud Investigation and Prevention

Superintendent Gregory V. Serio is proud to announce that the 2002 Anthony M. Kane Achievement Award has been bestowed on the Department’s Frauds Bureau. The Northeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators recognized the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau for outstanding achievement in the field of fraud investigation and prevention.

"We are honored to receive the 2002 Anthony M. Kane Achievement Award. This Award acknowledges the Northeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators’ high regard for the Frauds Bureau’s significant and aggressive work fighting fraud," said Serio. "I am pleased to be afforded this great honor and accept it on behalf of our Frauds Bureau whose work is effectively combating fraud and protecting New York’s consumers from the results of insurance fraud--higher rates."

Robert E. Southard, President of The Northeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators, said, "This award recognizes the significant work that agencies do in fraud investigation and prevention. I applaud the work of the Insurance Department’s Frauds Bureau and am pleased to impart this notable honor upon them."

The Northeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators identified a recent case investigated by the Frauds Bureau in assisting in the selection of this honor. Over 250 individuals have been arrested as part of an insurance fraud ring that has resulted in restitution of approximately $1.3 million and approximately another $1.5 million pending. Frauds Investigators John McDonald and James Masterson were identified as key components in this investigation. The Frauds Bureau was aided in the investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department, Vehicle Theft Section, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

The Award will be presented on May 15th at the Northeast Chapter of the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators Annual Banquet in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
