FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INSURANCE DEPARTMENT AND NYC OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT CREATE PARTNERSHIP FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio today announced that the Department has partnered with the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM), strengthening the State and Citys efforts to test and refine preparedness and emergency response protocols to natural and man-made disasters.
The Department is now part of the Citys Emergency Operations Center (NYC EOC) and will facilitate quick resolution of insurance-related issues stemming from disasters in New York City. Insurance issues raised at the NYC EOC will be quickly transmitted to the Insurance Emergency Operations Center (IEOC) for immediate resolution. The IEOC, a public-private initiative between the Department and the insurance industry, was launched in May, 2001 and proved to be an invaluable asset in responding to the attacks of September 11, 2001.
"The Departments partnership with OEM is another proactive step we're taking to safeguard the insurance industry against disruption during times of emergency," Superintendent Serio said. "This week's national security announcements are powerful reminders of just how important the insurance industry is to our economy. The Departments seat at the NYC EOC will ensure the unimpeded flow of insurance dollars to New Yorkers and businesses at a time when such resources are most needed."
"We are pleased to welcome the Insurance Department to the NYC EOC," said OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno. "Insurance is the conduit that provides disaster victims the ability to address the financial adversity surrounding the disaster and having the Insurance Department at the table to address this critical issue gives added value to New York City."
