FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEPARTMENT’S CONSUMER OUTREACH CONTINUES AT AUGUST FAIRS

Superintendent of Insurance Howard Mills today announced that specialists from the New York State Insurance Department’s Consumer Services Bureau (CSB) will be staffing information booths at the Erie County Fair, to be held Aug. 9-20 in Hamburg, NY and the New York State Fair in Syracuse, NY, which starts on Aug. 24 and continues through Sept. 4.

"New York State is committed to educating consumers about insurance and that means reaching them wherever they are," Superintendent Mills stated. "These two fairs have a great tradition and draw tens of thousands. We hope many of those traveling to Hamburg and Syracuse in the coming weeks take a few moments to stop by the Insurance Department’s booth and take advantage of the valuable services the Insurance Department has to offer."

Under Superintendent Mills, the Department has embarked on a number of aggressive public education programs on issues such as flood insurance and hurricane preparedness, how consumers can protect themselves from conducting business with an unlicensed insurer, and the potential economic advantages to purchasing long term care insurance (LTC). The Insurance Department’s web site, www.ins.state.ny.us, added last month a new interactive tool allowing New Yorkers to compare the premium costs and coverage for different LTC plans.

Moreover, the Insurance Department’s presence at these two fairs will give New Yorkers an opportunity to ask questions about, and receive consumers guides on, automobile, health, homeowners’ and life insurance, as well as Healthy NY, the state’s reduced cost-health insurance program for the working uninsured and small businesses.

The Department’s CSB specialists can be found at the Erie County Fair, 5600 McKinley Parkway, Hamburg, NY, situated in the International Agri-Center building. At the State Fair, 581 State Fair Blvd., Syracuse, Department personnel are going to be based in the Verizon Center of Progress Building.
