INSURANCE DEPARTMENT ACTIVATES DISASTER HOTLINE

The New York State Insurance Department today activated its toll-free Disaster Hotline to assist property owners in the event they experience flood damage caused by heavy rains moving through the state, Acting Superintendent Eric R. Dinallo said.

The Insurance Department’s Disaster Hotline number is 1-800-339-1759. The hotline is staffed by personnel from the Department’s Consumer Services Bureau on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

“Consumers who have storm-related damage and are having difficulty dealing with their insurance company or understanding their coverage should give the hotline a call,” said Mr. Dinallo. “We will be available to help New Yorkers work through the claims process with their insurance companies should serious storm-related damage occur.”

In general, homeowner’s insurance covers damage to a home due to such storm-related perils as snow, ice, wind and fallen objects. Auto insurance generally provides coverage for most storm-related perils if the auto is insured by a comprehensive coverage policy. While flood damage to a home is generally not covered by a homeowner’s policy, windstorm damage and damage from fallen tries are usually covered.

Property owners whose homes or businesses are damaged by flooding are protected provided their properties are covered by flood insurance, which is available under the federally-backed National Flood Insurance Program.

Property owners who experience damage should first review their insurance policies to determine the extent of their coverage and then consult with their insurance agent to clarify coverage and file claims.
