New York State Consumer Protection Board, Insurance Department Announce Information Series for Insurance Buyers


Agencies Kick-off 'National Consumer Week' with First in Series of Free
Educational Pamphlets on Various of Types of Insurance

New York State Consumer Protection Board Acting Chairperson May M. Chao and State Insurance Superintendent Gregory V. Serio today kicked-off National Consumer Protection Week with the announcement that a new brochure is available to guide consumers in the purchase of auto insurance.

  "A Consumer Guide to Purchasing Automobile Insurance" is the first in a series of educational, easy-to-read pamphlets available to consumers.

"The Consumer Protection Board is pleased to offer this new series as a resource for all New Yorkers," said Acting Chairperson May M. Chao. "It is especially fitting to launch the new Insurance Information series during National Consumer Protection Week. National Consumer Protection Week runs from Feb. 3 through Feb. 9.

"Buying any type of insurance can be confusing for consumers and it is important to make sound, informed decisions," said Insurance Superintendent Gregory V. Serio. "This new pamphlet series offers practical tips and information to help consumers understand what they are buying and I encourage consumers to let the State Insurance Department and Consumer Protection Board help you get the most from your insurance dollar."

The new Insurance Information series includes the recently available Consumer Guide to Purchasing Auto Insurance which offers consumer-friendly tips on what insurance is required and what is optional. In addition, with over 200 companies offering automobile insurance in New York State, the guide offers important tips for consumers to use when comparison shopping for auto insurance. Guides on long-term care insurance, homeowner's insurance and other types of insurance will be added to the series in the near future.
