Alan Rachlin, a Principal Attorney with the New York State Insurance Department’s Office of General Counsel, was appointed on Aug. 12 as a Commissioner of the American Bar Association’s Commission on Mental and Physical Disability.

Rachlin will serve a one-year term on the Commission. His appointment was made by ABA President H. Thomas Wells Jr.

“The Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law plays an important role ensuring those with disabilities are fully integrated into our society, and the volunteer lawyers who serve on the commission provide crucial support to the Commission's efforts,” said Alex Hurder, the Commission’s Chair.

As a member of the Commission, Rachlin will join 14 other volunteer lawyers from across the country. The Commission is designed to promote the ABA’s commitment to justice and the rule of law for persons with mental, physical and sensory disabilities, and to encourage disabled individuals to participate in the legal profession. He will participate in the 2009 ABA National Conference on the Employment of Lawyers with Disabilities, which will be aimed at encouraging disability diversity in the legal profession.

Rachlin has been a member of the Insurance Department since 1969 and has worked in such areas as health insurance, medical malpractice insurance and life insurance. He graduated from City College of CUNY and received his law degree from New York Law School.
