Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin today named George L. Johansen Deputy Director of the Frauds Bureau.

Mr. Johansen comes to the Insurance Department with more than 30 years of law enforcement experience. Prior to joining the Department, Mr. Johansen worked for the Special Commissioner of Investigations for the New York City School System. Many of the cases he investigated involved mismanagement and illegal activities.

"George has strong leadership skills and a longstanding commitment to law enforcement – making him an ideal choice for this position," said Levin. "I am pleased to have him join our team and I look forward to his help in stepping up our fight against fraud in New York State."

From 1967 to 1991, Mr. Johansen served with the New York State Police. He rose quickly through the ranks and in 1972 was promoted to Supervising Chief of the Auto Theft Unit. In 1981, he was promoted to Senior Investigator. He was also a member of the Major Case Squad at State Police Headquarters, having worked on many high profile cases throughout the metropolitan area.

Mr. Johansen served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965, having completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged.

He received his Criminal Justice degree from Westchester County Community College in Valhalla and has taken several courses on insurance fraud and internal background investigations.
