Limited Agent Licensing

A Limited Agent (LR) license is a license that allows specific companies like rental vehicle companies, wireless communications equipment vendors, and self-service storage companies (for personal effects) to sell certain insurance to consumers.

This license is for entities only so applicants should follow the instructions for Entity Licensing Below.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • No exam is required for this license.
  • No continuing education is required for this license.
  • The entities training program and customer brochures must be submitted to DFS for approval with the application, prior to use.

Renewal Period

  • License will remain valid for two years from July 1 - June 30
  • License must be renewed every even year, i.e.: 2026, 2028, 2030

Fees

  • Refer to the Department's Application Fee Schedule to determine the specific fee for any application being filed with the Department.

Apply Online

Access the original entity application and pay the licensing fee of $80 ($40 half fee if applying in an odd year) in NY LINX. Payment options include credit card, electronic funds transfer, or paper check.

Browsers and Blockers

  • Use a supported browser: The latest version plus one previous of Edge, FF, Chrome and Safari, are supported.
  • Disable “Pop-up Blockers” in your browser before using portal applications.
  • Application may be unavailable from 7:30am to 7:45am daily for scheduled maintenance.
  • Applications may not be compatible with cell phones, tablets or other mobile devices.

The Department will review the application, verify that there is nothing in the applicant’s background that should prevent the license from being issued, and then issue the appropriate license.

Check Status/Print License

The Department does not mail paper licenses. Use the Producer/Licensee Search application to determine if a license has been issued and to view the license number. Log in to NY LINX to save and print the license as soon as it is issued.

Renewing a License
