New York State Insurance Department Part of National Effort to Gain Justice for Holocaust Survivors and Their Heirs

March 17, 1998

Governor George E. Pataki and Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin today announced that New York is now part of an interstate regulatory alliance charged with examining files of European insurers suspected of withholding claims payments due to Holocaust survivors. This interstate alliance is the result of a meeting by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

"New York has been leading the nation in securing justice for Holocaust survivors and their heirs, many of whom are owed long-overdue payments on insurance claims," Governor Pataki said. "Our Holocaust Claims Processing Office -- the first of its kind in the nation -- and our State Insurance Department have been aggressively pursuing claims by Holocaust survivors and their heirs against Swiss banks and European insurers."

"This new interstate alliance between state insurance departments across the nation will complement our efforts in New York and help secure the justice that has been denied Holocaust survivors for so long," the Governor said.

New York State Insurance Department Superintendent Neil D. Levin said, "New York has long advocated a two-prong approach to the investigation and settlement of Holocaust insurance claims. The alliance formed by all 50 states is part one. Now we will work with the other states on part two which involves the creation of a international commission which will undertake a thorough review of the books and records of insurers. In particular, the commitment by the states of California and Florida adds great momentum to our fight for justice."

In addition to creating an international commission, the interstate regulatory alliance will work on creating an international database.

The New York Holocaust Claims Processing Office stands ready to assist all insurance claimants. Their toll-free telephone number is 800-695-3318.
