Superintendent of Insurance Neil D. Levin today announced that he has named John R. Cashin a Deputy Superintendent effective immediately. Mr. Cashin will oversee the activities of the Department’s Property Bureau as well as coordinate various Department management initiatives.

Most recently, Cashin was a senior production executive with account management and corporate development responsibilities in the New York office of Willis Reinsurance. Willis is the world’s third largest reinsurance intermediary with 10 offices in the United States and 31 offices worldwide. He has been in the reinsurance brokerage business for 20 years.

Cashin began his professional career in 1968 as a marketing representative for the IBM Corporation, selling computers and related software and services to property and casualty insurers. From 1978 to 1980 he served as counsel to the Senate Committee on Insurance in the New York State Legislature.

"I am pleased to welcome John as our newest Deputy Superintendent," said Levin. "His extensive experience in management and in reinsurance will be a tremendous asset to the Department and I look forward to John’s contributions as he assumes responsibility for the Property Bureau."

Governor Pataki appointed Cashin to the boards of the United Nations Development Corporation (1995) and the Javits Convention Center Operating Corporation (1999). He also served on the New York State Legislature’s Temporary Panel on Homeowners’ Insurance (1998-1999). He is also a frequent speaker at industry forums and his Underwriting Insight column appeared quarterly in the property/casualty edition of Best’s Review.

A lifelong resident of New York, he received his bachelor’s degree from St. Francis College in Brooklyn and his MBA from the City University of New York. He holds a law degree from Fordham University School of Law and a Master’s Degree in International Law from New York University Graduate School of Law. He is admitted to the state and federal bars in New York (1977), the Second Circuit Court of Appeals (1978), the United States Court of International Trade (1991) and the United States Supreme Court (1991). He is a member of the American Bar Association committees on Torts and Insurance Practice and Excess & Surplus Lines and Reinsurance. He currently lives in Stillwater, New York.
