Recent Department Visits to Western NY Highlight the Need for Training Session

Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio today announced that as a result of the Department’s recent visits to Western New York, representatives from the Department’s Frauds Bureau will be conducting a training session for the District Attorney’s office and local law enforcement in an effort to expand insurance fraud prosecutions in the Genesee County area.

The training session, to be held at Genesee Community College in Batavia, N.Y. at 9AM and repeated at 1PM, was set up in response to a request by Genesee County representatives for training by the Frauds Bureau during two recent Department visits to the area.

On July 25th, the Department participated in Governor Pataki’s ‘Capital For a Day’ initiative. The Governor and many New York State agencies, including the Insurance Department brought the operation of State government to the city of Batavia in order to bring government closer to the people of New York.

In addition, from August 6-9 the Insurance Department operated out of Buffalo, which was the first stop in a Department’s expansion on the Governor’s "Capital For a Day’ initiative. The Superintendent and Department staff met with consumers, area business leaders, elected officials, insurance agents, insurance company representatives, doctors and various fraud fighting agencies to discuss Western NY issues and how best to work together to provide insurance services to New Yorkers. In response to concerns brought to light during these trips, follow-up visits by Department specialists were scheduled.

"Follow-up visits, like this one to Genesee County, are exactly the goal behind the Governor’s initiative to bring our services to consumers across the State," said Serio. "We meet with members of the community, learn about pertinent insurance issues and deploy Department specialists to address the area concerns."

The training session on October 18th will focus on how to prepare a strong insurance fraud case for prosecution, detailing how best to utilize Department resources and how the Frauds Bureau can help with local insurance fraud investigations. The Frauds Bureau continues to meet with prosecutors and state and local law enforcement from around the state because coordinated efforts have proven to result in more successful investigations.

In addition to the frauds training session that resulted from the Department’s visits to Western New York, on August 15th representatives from the Department’s Consumer Services Bureau participated in an information session in Chautauqua County to explain insurance options for former employees and retirees of Empire Specialty Steel.

"I am happy to see this initiative really working for consumers of New York and we are busy planning the next stop in the Department’s tour of the State," said Serio.
