‘Consumer Protection Week’ Is A Good Time To Ensure Proper Coverage

Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio in recognition of February 3rd – 9th ‘Consumer Protection Week’, detailed consumer resources to help all New Yorkers be more informed about their insurance policies and rights.

"The week of February 3rd – 9th is designated ‘Consumer Protection Week’ and there is no better time than this for all consumers to ensure that they have proper insurance coverage," said Serio. "Consumers should utilize the plethora of Department resources to ensure that they have the affordable, comprehensive insurance coverage they need."

The Consumer Services Bureau of the Insurance Department offers various publications and services to aid New Yorkers to ensure that they are properly informed, properly covered and properly represented. The consumer hotline is 1-800-342-3736. The guides for consumers include:

In addition to these publications the Department has launched two health insurance related Web sites for consumers. Health insurance information for small business owners, their employees and other uninsured workers is available on Healthy NY offers affordable, comprehensive insurance coverage to the thousands of hard working uninsured families in New York.

Also, the Department’s online interactive version of the Consumer Guide to HMOs is available at The online version enables consumers to compare HMOs operating in their county or select individual HMOs to compare. The Web site allows users to compare information on eight key performance indicators, including complaints and external review data. Premiums by county are also available on the Web site.

"Our guides, Web sites and consumer representatives are important resources that I urge consumers to utilize," added Serio. "Insurance is an essential element in everyday life that secures our standard of living and the stability of our families as well as our property rights. Taking this time to ensure proper coverage will provide consumers with a feeling of security that if adversity strikes, their insurance policy is there to help them with their financial recovery."

The Insurance Department encourages New Yorkers to obtain copies of the consumer guides which are available on the Department’s Web or by calling 1-800-342-3736.
