Licensees Utilizing The Convenience Of New On-Line Renewal Capability After Hours and On Weekends

Property/casualty agents are utilizing New York State’s advanced licensing technology to renew their licenses over the Internet from the comfort of their homes on the weekends and after their work day ends. By renewing their licenses over the internet and taking advantage of the unique convenience that this new 24 hour a day capability provides this is efficiency and customer service at its best Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio announced today.

"I am extremely pleased that property/casualty agents are taking advantage of the 24-hour –a-day seven days a week customer service afforded by this on-line technology. In fact, since its implementation more than 3,600 agents have renewed on-line and over 100 agents renewed their licensees over the past several weekends," said Serio. "Utilizing this automated technology to improve customer service and enhance efficiency and communication between regulators and the industry epitomizes the Governor’s e-Government initiative, promoting a government without walls."

On-line renewals provide value to New York property/casualty agents who can now renew their licenses 24 hours a day, seven days a week without necessitating the need for a paper filing or human verification. Electronic licensing saves both time and money while eliminating the number of incomplete applications submitted. Each application is verified complete as it is submitted to ensure completeness.

Electronic licensing is accomplished in a secure, encrypted environment and works as follows:

  • A licensee will access the application on the Department’s Web site and key in a password unique to that applicant.
  • Once the entry is cleared and the license is selected, instructions appear to assist the licensee in completing the application.
  • Once the application is completed, the licensee is asked if they want to pay by credit card or check.
  • Licenses are issued to those who pay by credit card within 24-48 hours, while those who decide to pay by check are mailed their licenses upon receipt of payment by the Department.

"Timely issuance of original and renewal licenses is a key component of the Department’s speed to market initiative. Individual life and accident and health licensees were the first licensees to be able to renew their licenses over the internet last June and we are pleased to continue the success with property/casualty agents," added Serio.

In June 2001, life agents were able to renew their licenses on-line followed in October 2001 by the unveiling of an on-line complaint form that enabled consumers to file complaints against Department licensees electronically over the internet.

In addition, in November the Department launched an interactive consumer health insurance Web site allowing consumers to compare HMOs on-line and in December the Department commenced on-line processing of non-resident brokers licenses through the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), contributing to a streamlined multi-state licensing system. The Department continues to move forward with key initiatives such as original on-line licensing, on-line broker renewals and expansion of non-resident licensing through the NIPR to agents.

The Department has established a dedicated telephone line (518) 474-6630 to assist anyone requiring assistance in completing the application on-line. Additional information on this licensing application process is also available on the Department’s Web site at
