Department Offers 24 Hours-a-Day, Seven Days-a-Week Convenience to NYS Brokers

Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio today announced that all of New York’s approximately 35,000 authorized brokers now have the ability to renew their licenses electronically via the internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Utilizing the latest in licensing technology, the Department is now meeting the needs of brokers in New York State better than ever before.

"The Department continues to build on our online licensing capabilities to make both the application and renewal process the most effective and efficient for all producers," said Serio. "I am pleased to add the broker renewals as the final piece to this progressive Department initiative - this is customer service at its best."

Earlier this year the Department launched an online capability for all agents and brokers to apply for original licenses, while online renewal licensing for life and accident health agents went online last year and this past February an on-line renewal application for property casualty agents was rolled out.

"I am thoroughly pleased with the Department’s ability to utilize the latest in technology to meet the needs of New York’s producers. Most importantly, producers are utilizing this new capability. In fact, 60% of property casualty agents renewed online earlier this year and many agents took advantage of this flexibility and actually renewed their licenses after hours and on weekends," added Serio. "Since Monday, when the broker renewal went into full production, over 150 brokers have renewed online. This is exactly what I had anticipated - brokers are taking advantage of this electronic convenience that allows the Department to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Online renewals are accomplished in a secure, encrypted environment and each application is verified complete as it is submitted to ensure completeness. The licensee accesses the renewal application on the Department’s Web site and keys in a password unique to that applicant. Once the entry is cleared and the license is selected, instructions appear to assist the licensee in completing the renewal application. Once the application is completed, the licensee is asked if they want to pay by credit card or check. Licenses are issued to those who pay by credit card within 24-48 hours, while those who decide to pay by check are mailed their licenses upon receipt of payment by the Department.

The Department has established a dedicated telephone line (518) 474-6630 to assist anyone requiring assistance in completing the application on-line. Additional information on this licensing application process is also available on the Department’s Web site at
