Insurance Department Honored for Business to Business E-Commerce Applications

Superintendent of Insurance Gregory V. Serio announced today that the Insurance Department received the Best Practice Award for Business to Business E-Commerce Applications from Technology Managers Forum, the professional association for high ranking information technology managers.

The Department received the award for its on-line licensing application technology that permits those applying for or renewing an insurance agent or broker license to do so electronically over the internet. The Best Practice Awards program highlights the Department’s application for its standard of excellence and credits the application for its ability to be replicated.

"We are truly honored to receive the Best Practice Award bestowed by the Technology Managers Forum. The Department is very proud of our business to business applications and it is quite gratifying to be recognized in this distinctive way," said Insurance Superintendent Gregory V. Serio. "It is uniquely gratifying to be recognized by Information Technology experts which means that we are meeting the needs of the States producers effectively and efficiently."

By leveraging technology the Department’s on-line licensing capability reduced the waiting time for an insurance license to be issued from months to hours. More than 31,000 licenses have already been issued using this technology including several thousand to those who applied on weekends and holidays.

"The Department’s ability to provide real time licensing has been a priority of Governor Pataki and the Department In fact, using the latest in technology to meet the needs of our producers was identified by the Governor’s Office For Technology as one of the State of New York’s top 75 e-commerce initiatives," added Serio. "I would specifically like to congratulate Salvatore Castiglione, Assistant Deputy Superintendent, and Ronald Minafri, Deputy Superintendent and the staffs of the Consumer Services/Licensing and Systems Bureaus for their determined effort to provide this service to New York State producers."

Technology Managers Forum awarded the Insurance Department the Best Practices Award in recognition of the Department’s quality achievement in technology management. Past winners of the Best Practice Award include GE Aircraft Engines with Enigma & Spaceworks and Prudential U.S. Consumer Group.

This is the seventh year of the Best Practice Awards which had over 150 applicants from the United States and Canada. Judges were Information Technology Managers who have distinguished themselves in the area for which they were judging and applicants were reviewed by a group of their peers.

Last month, the Insurance Department received The New York State Forum for Information Resource Management of the Rockefeller Institute of Government’s ‘Best of the Web’ Award in the state category as part of the Forum’s Annual Best Practice and Achievement awards.
